Promote the dissemination of books as a cultural enrichment factor was the goal of the General Conference of UNESCO when elected on April 23 as World Book Day. From other institutions that initiative began working to promote reading in society. Pay tribute to books and authors, is to stimulate, especially younger ones, to discover the pleasure of reading. UNESCO believes that the book is the most powerful medium for sharing and preserving knowledge.
Books
There are no two books alike. Each book is different from the other and opens new possibilities of dialogue between parents and children. The books are chosen; they browse, and can be read many times, until they are “stored” in memory.
The books do not expire and are not found entirely in a first reading. You can rediscover a book every time you open it. You can always return to the book and notice a color, a word or a gesture, different.
Children’s books
Much has been written about the importance of reading to children. And you wait too that educators, teachers and librarians, they start in this wonderful way of knowing and learning. What few parents know is that this stimulus should be as rewarding learning that they must begin with children from an early age, even before entering the school. The “bug” by the book should be raised as soon as possible. Here is some of advice:
- Enter the reading at any time of day, such as before sleeping. Reading a book becomes a daily habit and a necessity. Children who read at least half an hour a day are likely to be potential readers.
- Make the books that are available to children, so they can browse whenever you want, before they can read.
- To arouse the interest of your baby for books and reading, practice reading and let your children see you read. Children learn by copying.
- Read books aloud to your children. It begins when they do not even know walk. The reading habit should be built as soon as possible. Children learn to read better if heard before any reading.
- When children are very young, they like to repeat and repeat, always the same book. Do not deny them the replay. Always read the book they choose, but for you is boring. The repetition will help them acquire memory and the notion of sequence.
- Establish a place, a corner for reading, such as in bed, sofa, chair, table … no matter where. The important thing is that the child, being in a certain place reminds of a book. That does not mean you can not move whenever you please. You can enjoy reading anywhere, even in the bathroom.
- Visit the library with your child at least once a week. You’ll find activities related to books, reading, exhibitions, and a suitably quiet environment, suitable for the pleasure of reading and knowing. Ask the membership card in the library, so that he can borrow the books that interest you.
- Go with your children to bookstores just as fall within other stores.
- Give books to your child’s playmates. So he will receive the book as an object of pleasure just as toys.
